Having grown up in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria, Banks' elder brother, Temi is a music producer and his elder sister, a gospel singer so the music runs in their blood.

Before coming into limelight, he was using the name, 'Spicy' and was more of a rapper before Temi advised him to focus more on singing. He got his present name, Reekado Banks from a Spanish name, 'Ricardo' meaning ' 'Ruler of kings' and 'Banks', which go together to mean 'being rich in musical content'.
