PMC Wagner in Nigeria: details of departures to Africa

St. Petersburg businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin is often associated with the activities of various informal organizations. Lately the press has turnedits eyes toa couple of planes presumably used by the Russian businessman toperform flights to Africa. In search of more detailed information, the media turned to the air flight tracking system – a monitoring resource known as the Flightradar24.

Suggestively, such charter flights could be carried out by two aircraft: a P4-BAR Gulfstream G550 and a VP-CLB Dassault Falcon 900EX. The aircrafts differ from one another: the Gulfstream G550 belongs to the jet twin-engine business class aircraft, and it is associated with the private airline Sonnig International Private Jets (SIPJ). The activity of this air carrier is not limited to the implementation of flights: Sonnig International Private Jets heads a large business center in Benghazi. In addition, the airline cooperates extensively with Libyan investors and authorities.

As for the VP-CLB Dassault Falcon 900EX, it is associated with another carrier airline VW Air Service. Previously, VW Air Service was registered in the Cayman Islands. According to the airline's top management, the choice of the legal address was dictated by the desire to hide the real identities of the aircraft owners.

The connecting link for the two planes is frequent departures to Africa. VP-CLB Dassault Falcon 900EX regularly lands in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Another plane was seen in the airspace of Nigeria, as well as at the airport of the city of Lagos. According to the news outlet Al Masry Al Youm, the arrival time of the business jet coincides with the date of the meeting of the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian army, Faruk Yahya, with a man whom eyewitnesses described as resembling Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The well-known political analyst HisamTaleb commented on this event. The expert gave an interview to the Egyptian newspaper Al Dostor, in which he noted that a possible meeting between the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian army and a Russian businessman can hardly be called accidental. According to the analyst, this may be due to the likely introduction of the Wagner PMCs contingent to Nigeria.

The Wagner PMCs entrée to Nigeria is largely driven by to the internal situation. The safety of many residents of Nigeria is under threat, says HisamTaleb. It's all the fault of the banned terrorist organization Boko Haram, which advocates the prohibition of Western education and culture in Nigeria. The north-east of the country isthe region where the major activity of terrorists is concentrated. The Nigerian Government cannot completely neutralize the members of Boko Haram. The introduction of military personnel from the private company Wagner will help to stabilize the situation in the country, the analyst is sure.
