Introduction

Benjamin Okike is the first Nigerian Professor of Information Encryption, a sub-field of Computer Security. He is currently a Faculty Member of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Abuja

Early Life

Benjamin Okike was born on 22nd November, 1970 to the family of Mr Okike Onwuasoanya and Mrs Nwannedia Okike. His parents are from Amangwu Arochukwu in present-day Abia State, Nigeria. He parents were both traders. In 1977, Benjamin enrolled  Okoffia Community School, Okoffia, Ezza in present day Ebonyi State, but later went to Umunnabuo Community School, Umuchi-Akuma, Ihechiowa in Arochukwu Local Government Area,  Abia State to complete  his primary education. Between 1982 and 1986, Benjamin attended Abakaliki High School (Presco) in Ebonyi State and from there proceeded to complete his secondary education in Mary Slessor Secondary Technical School, Arochukwu in 1987.

Personal Life

In 2007, Benjamin got married to Cynthia, a graduate of Computer Science, [University of Abuja], Nigeria. This marriage is blessed with two boys and a girl. They are: Chidubem (11/01/2009), Chibukem (09/06/2011) and Chinonyerem (20/12/2015).

Career Progression

In 2000, Benjamin was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer in the defunct Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, University of Abuja, Nigeria. Benjamin was promoted to the rank of a Lecturer II in 2004. Two years after (2006), he earned an accelerated promotion to the rank of a Lecturer I and was also promoted to a Senior Lecturer rank in 2009. In 2013, he was promoted to an Associate Professor and subsequently became a Professor in 2016.

Official Responsibility

Between 2014 and 2016, Benjamin was appointed the Head of Department of Computer [4]. His appointment made it possible for the department to earn an accreditation for the first time since 2009 when the department got her independence from the defunct Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science which started operation in 1990. His tenure as the Head of Department marked the commencement of both undergraduate which lost accreditation in 2010 and stopped admission since then and also Postgraduate Programme (Masters and Ph. D.), which stopped operation in 1995 as a result of brain drain of lecturers to other parts of the world for greener pasture. Also, from 2017 through 2019, he was appointed as a Deputy Director, Learners’ Support Services for the university's Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education (CDL & CE) section.

Engagement beyond Border

Between 2013 and 2014, Benjamin was a Visiting Scholar to the [Department of Computer Science], [University of Ghana], Legon. There, he taught some Computer Science courses and supervised projects. Also, Benjamin was a Research Scholar in Cyber Security in [Fayetteville State University], [North Carolina], [United States] between 2016 and 2017 under Professor Nicklov Radoslav as Departmental Chair.
