Harry Akande Biography and Educational Background

Harry Akande was born on the 3rd of March, 1943 to the family of Pa Joseph Afolabi and Mrs Regina Akande of Orita Merin, Ibadan. His father, Joseph Afolabi was the leader of Olagoke families.

Harry had his primary education at the Idikan and Oke-Bola St. James Elementary School and at the Abadina College, University of Ibadan. In 1957, he got admitted to Olivet Heights Oyo, where he also performed excellently.

In 1961, he gained admission to the prestigious Hampton University in Hampton Virginia, graduating in 1967 with the highest honors from the Accounting and Finance.

In 1969, he became the first black graduate to obtain an MBA from America's top business school,  Northwestern University's J L Kellogg School of management. His entry to the MBA course was by scholarship, following graduation from Hampton University.

Career and Politics

Chief Harry Akande was reputed to be one of the richest men in Nigeria. He was the chairman of Akande International Corporation (AIC) — with interest in healthcare, engineering, building construction and power.

In 1970, he returned to Nigeria Nigeria having field positions as a financial consultant with KPMG Peak Marwick and Standard Oil in the USA.

In 1971, Akande International Corporation (later shortened to AIC limited) was first registered. The same year, Akande became the first president of NAFTEC (New Africa and Technical Electrical Company) representative company of General Electric (GE) of America.

In 1976, AIC established Engineering Division through joint ventures Company with the UK Balfour Betty Engineering and named Engineering & Power Development Nigeria Limited (EPDN).

In 1980, AIC undertook the Ryan Dam Hydroelectric Planting and Development, together with Wimpey from the United Kingdom, and in 1982, the Balanga Dam and Irrigation Scheme were built and supervised in Bauchi together with EPD.

Harry Akande was also associated with the development of the Crystal Palace hotel, a 1,000 bedroom hotel in Nassau, Bahamas as well as Las Cuevas Bay Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago.

Chief Akande is popular in and around Africa, Europe, and the USA for making ideas a reality. He has been linked to the development of the 1000-bedroom hotel Crystal Palace in Nassau, the Bahamas, and the Cuevas Bay Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago.

As a politician, Akande was the former President of the All Peoples Party (APP) Trustees' Council; Nigeria's second-largest political party. He was also a one-time presidential aspirant on the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform.

Chief Harry Akande is survived by his wife, Chief Mrs Tolulope Akande four children and grandchildren. One of his sons, Olumide Akande is married to award-winning Nollywood actress, Dakore Egbuson-Akande.
