Wafula Chebukati is a Kenyan lawyer. He is currently serving as the chairman of the New Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

He took the oath of office at Supreme Court on January 20, 2017, having succeeded Issack Hassan who previously held the position. Prior to the appointment, he had been the managing partner of the Nairobi office of the Cootow and Associates Advocates.

Wafula Chebukati Biography and Educational Background

Wafula Chebukati was born on the 22nd of December, 1961in Bungoma County, but he originally hails from Kiminini in Trans-Nzoia County. He attended St Peters Mumias, Bokoli Secondary School and Lenana High School, after which he gained admission to study Law at the prestigious University of Nairobi.

He graduated from the University of Nairobi in in 1985 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree and proceeded to the Kenya School of Law. He was admitted to the roll of Advocates in 1986. 

Mr Wafula Chebukati also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)..

Career

Wafula Chebukati has specialised in legal practice in the fields of International commerce, trade and investment law, Corporate law, governance and environmental law.

He is the founder of the Cootow & Associates Advocates, a law firm that offers different legal services, ranging from maritime to shipping, company secretary to aviation laws, arbitration, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) insurance to banking and commercial law practices.

In 2007, he vied for the Saboti parliamentary seat under the Orange Party political party but lost to the current Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who vied for the seat on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket.

The lawwer who is currently chairing over the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) resigned from the Orange party before applying for his post at the commission.

Personal Life

Wafula Chebukati enjoys playing gold and is the Captain and chairman of Mombasa and Nyali Golf club He is also a member of the Kenya Golfing Society.
