Millie Odhiambo Biography and Educational Background

Millie Odhiambo was born on the 1st of November, 1966 in Homa Bay to the family of Harrison Odhiambo and Damaris Auma Odhiambo. She is the fourth child in a family of eight children. Her father died in 1973 in a boating accident.

She had her primary education at Homa Bay Primary School. Upon obtaining her First School Leaving Certificate, she enrolled at St. Francis Girls Secondary School and then Limuru Girls High School.

In 1986, she gained admission to study at the prestigious University of Nairobi, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Laws degree. She was amongst the top 5% of her class. She holds a Masters in Law (LLM) in Public Service Law from New York University.

Millie also has diplomas and certificates in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Governance and Human Rights, and Anti-Corruption strategies from the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and Lund University, Sweden; Les Aspin Centre of Governance and Marquette University, (USA); and IDLI, Rome, respectively.

She is married to Magugu Mabona of Zimbabwe. The two got married in 2006, after meeting online, they are currently in a long-distance relationship.

Career and Politics

Millie Odhiambo began her career in the attorney general's office practising civil litigation before moving on to human rights law, with an emphasis on women and children.

She was the chairperson of Coalition on Violence Against Women-Kenya in 1999, and from 2000 to 2008, she was the founder and director of the CRADLE Children's Foundation.

She was nominated as a Member of Parliament in 2007 by Orange Democratic Movement and then elected as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement in the 2013 Kenyan general election.
