Martin Agbaso is a Nigerian politician and economist, who formerly served as the Senator for the Imo East (Owerri) constituency of Imo State, Nigeria.

He is one of the most popular politicians in Imo State, having contested for governorship twice. His younger brother, Sir Jude Agbaso was the deputy governor during Owelle Rochas Okorocha but was impeached over charges relating to bribery and corruption.

Chief Martin Agbaso Biography and Educational Background

Ochudo Martin Agbaso was born on the 5th of April, 1959 in Emekuku, Imo State to the family of Chief Nathan and Mrs Anna Agbaso.

He began his early education at Our Lady’s Primary School, Emekuku (now Chief Obi Memorial Primary School), obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate in 1971. He subsequently enrolled at Sabastine Academy, (now Emekuku High School), where he graduated in flying colours in 1976, receiving his West African School Certificate (WAEC).

He thereafter travelled to Italy, where he secured admission to study Social Sciences at the prestigious Pontifical University in Rome, Italy, obtaining his Advanced Diploma in 1980. 

Agbaso subsequently, obtained his B.Sc. and NASD Degrees in Finance, from the State University of New York, Old Westbury, USA, in 1983 and 1984 respectively.

Career

In 1983, just immediately after graduating, Martin Agbaso began his corporate career at Prudential Inc. of New York, a world-famous financial Derivative and Strategic Investment Management organiza­tion. He rose rapidly through ranks and by 1991, he had become a Financial Analyst in Prudential Incorporated.

He founded SudRiva Construction Company Limited and SudRiva Oil and Gas Limited between 1994 and 1995 and they've both since evolved into major players in both construction and oil and gas sectors.

Martin Agbaso is a member of the New York Stock Exchange, Member, Commodity Improviser of New York and the Million-Dollar Roundtable on Interest Sensitive Products at Prudential Incorporated.

Politics

In 1992, Chief Martin Agbaso won the Imo East Senatorial seat under the platform of the National Republican Convention. He contested against the likes of Dr Roland Anyanwu and Chief Bright Nwanne.

In 2001, he got appointed by Presi­dent Olusegun Obasanjo to serve as the Special Assistant on Ecology. He handled the position from 2001 to 2004.

Chief Martin Agbaso was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the 2007 gubernatorial elections following which he made claims of victory. Ikedi Ohakim however emerged as the governor.

Personal Life

Martin Agbaso got married to his 19-year-old sweetheart, Robin, in New York at the age of 23. The union is blessed with three children; Nnanna Agbaso, Adanna Agbaso and Ikenna Agbaso.
Agbaso is a devoted Christain.
