Mukhisa Kituyi Biography and Educational Background

Mukhisa Kituyi was born on the 20th of October, 1956 in Bungoma District of Western Kenya to Jamin Kituyi and Joinah Mukasa Kituyi. He had his primary education at Mbakalo in Bungoma district, after which he proceeded to the Bokoli Secondary School, where he passed his Ordinary Level Certificate of Education examinations.

He subsequently, enrolled at the St Mary’s Yala High School, completing his Advanced Level Certificate of Education in 1976.

In 1977, Kituyi got admitted to pursue a bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations. Due to some reasons, he, however, had to switch to Makerere University in 1980, where he graduated with honours in Political Science and International Relations in 1982.

In 1983, he got admitted to a Diploma course in Comparative Production Systems at the University of Bergen, Norway. He also holds a PhD in Social Anthropology and a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from the institution.

Career and Politics

• From 1982-1983, Dr Mukhisa Kituyi worked as a Researcher at the Business and Economic Research Centre, Nairobi, Kenya.
• In 1986, he started working as a Researcher, The Christian Michelsens Institute, Norway. He worked there for two years and was majorly concentrated on coherence between different Nordic Development support models and programs in the key partner countries in Africa.
• From 1989 to 1990, he was a Programme Officer with the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD).
• Upon leaving NORAD in 1990, he started working as a Programme Director, African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS). He worked there till 1992 and during the period, he coordinated pan-African efforts at capacity building for civil society involved in Sustainable Development models.
• In 1992, Kituyi served as the Executive Director, Forum for The Restoration of Democracy in Kenya (FORD).
• From 1992 to 2007, he served as a Member of the Kenya Parliament representing Kimilili constituency in Western Kenya.
• In 2002, he got appointed as the Minister for Trade and Industry of the Republic of Kenya. He handled the position until 2007.
• In 2008, he started serving as the Chief Executive of the Kenya Institute of Governance based in
Nairobi.
• Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi served as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD from September 2013 to February 2021.

Personal Life

Mukhisa Kituyi is happily married to Ling Kituyi and they have four children namely; Ivar Makari Kituyi, Sitati Kituyi, Laila Kituyi and Thor Masalule Kituyi. Ivar died on the 28th of June, 2015 at the age of 30 after suffering a diabetic attack. He was buried at his father's Mbakalo Tongaren Constituency home.
