Sonia Birdi's real date of birth isn't public, but she was born in Nairobi to a Sikh family of Punjabi heritage, the daughter of Surinder and Kuljiridei Birdi. She is the firstborn in a family of four children.She had her primary education at Our Lady of Mercy Primary School in Nairobi South B, then proceeded to Loreto Convent, Msongari, for her secondary school education. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from D.R College in India

Sonia Birdi worked as a journalist reporting for Radia Africa's East FM from 1998 to 2005.

Birdi was recommended for a United Republican Party (URP) Makadara parliamentary ticket by residents but later supported TNA’s Benson Kangara, who eventually won the seat after the Jubilee coalition resolved to have a single candidate for the seat.
