Sonia Birdi Biography and Educational Background

Sonia Birdi's real date of birth isn't public, but she was born in Nairobi to a Sikh family of Punjabi heritage, the daughter of Surinder and Kuljiridei Birdi. She is the firstborn in a family of four children.

She had her primary education at Our Lady of Mercy Primary School in Nairobi South B, then proceeded to Loreto Convent, Msongari, for her secondary school education. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from D.R College in India

She further travelled to the United Kingdom, where she earned a master's degree in business administration from the prestigious Sheffield University.

Career

Sonia Birdi worked as a journalist reporting for Radia Africa's East FM from 1998 to 2005.

Her political ambitions began as a response to the suffering she saw while doing relief work in the aftermath of the Sinai oil fire at Mukuru kwa Njenga in 2011.

Birdi was recommended for a United Republican Party (URP) Makadara parliamentary ticket by residents but later supported TNA’s Benson Kangara, who eventually won the seat after the Jubilee coalition resolved to have a single candidate for the seat.

She was the first Kenyan Asian woman to serve in the national legislature.
