Cosmas Maduka Biography and Early Life
Cosmas Maduka was born on the 24th of December, 1958 to the family of Mr and Mrs Peter and Rose Maduka in Jos the capital of Plateau State, Nigeria. His parents originally hailed from Nnewi, but he was raised in the cold city of Jos. Cosmas was the second child in a family of four children.After his father's death in 1962, he was forced to start fending for himself. When he was 7, he withdrew from primary school at elementary 3 to assist his mother in hawking Akara (bean cakes) in Plateau, Jos.
When Cosmas Maduka was 12 years old, he moved to the Ebute Metta area of Lagos where he started serving as an apprentice in his uncle's automobile shop. He was very hardworking and in a short period of time, won his uncle's trust.
In 1975, Maduka's relationship with his uncle turned sour and his apprenticeship was abruptly terminated. This was as a result of the closure of the workshop, while Cosmas attended a church camp programme. His uncle was livid and dismissed him with only ₦200 as his settlement.
Educational Background
In 2003, Cosmas Maduka was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration (PhD) by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
He also holds an Alumnus of Harvard Business School (Executive Education Program).
Journey as an Entrepreneur
After the disappointing incident with his uncle, Cosmas Maduka founded an auto spare parts business called Maduka Brothers with his brother. They both however parted ways after some years due to ideological differences.
In the quest to succeed, the young Cosmas ventured into a new business of buying and selling motorcycle spare parts from Boulos Industries in Lagos. He ran the business for a while, but things fell apart after a while when he received the wrong spare parts consignment. This didn't only incur him great loss but also plunged him into debt. At a point, his landlord had to lock up his shop following his inability to renew his rent.
After losing his first capital, Maduka was forced to start over again. In a bid to earn himself a loving, he picked up a weight scale that he had received as a gift from his wedding, took it to the market, and started to charge 10 kobos from everyone who measured their weight.
After saving up some money, he teamed up with another friend named Dave to start a business which they called CosDave. Not long after launching the partnership, they had a falling out and separated.
Cosmas once again had to start up another business called Coscharis. The name Coscharis was formed from the combination of two names: his name, Cosmas, and his wife’s name, Charity.
Coscharis Group is now a conglomerate with a net worth of over $500million with several subsidiaries including Agric and Agro-Allied, Automobile Sales and Services, Auto care and Auto Components, ICT, Manufacturing, Petrochemical business sectors.
