Simple Tips To Improve Your Oral Health Routine

Simple Tips To Improve Your Oral Health Routine

Often people push their oral health to the back of their priority list, but it is actually one of the most important things that we should be taking care of. Plus, by taking just 5 minutes out of your day to focus on your oral health, you can relieve yourself of potential pain, discomfort and even serious illness in the future. Our oral health can have a serious impact on our overall health, so now is the time to make it a priority! So, let’s find out a few simple tips so you can improve your oral health routine.

Visit Your Dentist!

The first and most important thing on our list is to visit your private dentist. You could have a great oral health routine at home, but there are certain things that can develop that only a dentist can identify, which is why a combination of in-clinic appointments and at-home care is essential to keep your mouth as healthy as possible. Your dentist will also be able to provide you with personalised advice for your at-home routine, to make sure it is as effective as possible.

When you visit every 6 months, problems can be picked up early and rectified. If you leave it longer, problems can develop and the treatment is likely to be much more invasive and also far more expensive. Taking on the preventative approach by visiting regularly will be less painful and much cheaper in the long run! Plus, you can rest in the knowledge that you have a healthy and happy smile.

Drink Less Sugary Drinks and More Water

Next up, you should drink less sugary drinks and more water! Drinking sugary drinks causes plaque bacteria to produce acids from the sugar that attacks the enamel. Without sufficient enamel, there won’t be a protective outer shell to protect the more sensitive parts of your teeth.  When you lose enamel, you are far more sensitive to cavities or tooth decay, which are very serious.

So, drink less sugary drinks! If you do drink them, make sure to drink them through a straw to avoid as much contact as possible between your teeth and the sugar. The best thing that you can do is to replace the sugary drinks with water, as this is much healthier for your teeth. It may be difficult to adjust to begin with, but you will get used to it and it is so much better for your oral health!

Use Fluoride Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Another thing you can do to improve your oral health is use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. When you use fluoride products, it combines with calcium and phosphate in your mouth which then creates a really powerful defense system for your teeth. This then helps to provide a much stronger resistance to the formation of cavities or decay. Brush and use mouthwash twice a day with fluoride and you will be helping to protect your teeth.

Floss

While we’re on the topic of oral health at home, you should be flossing. Brushing and using mouthwash alone simply isn’t enough to remove the plaque, bacteria or food that is between your teeth. Without removing this, over time it will cause the surface of the tooth to decay. So, each night before bed, make sure that you floss well to remove the excess plaque and food between the teeth. This could help to prevent serious issues later down the line!

Stop Smoking

Smoking can be extremely damaging to the teeth, as it causes a lack of oxygen in your bloodstream, meaning infected gums struggle to heal. Due to this, smoking causes gum disease in smokers much quicker than in those that don’t smoke. Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults and is extremely common if you don’t look after your teeth, mouth and gums properly.

So, it is really important for your oral health that you stop smoking. This will not only help your oral health, but it will make you so much healthier in general!
