Matthew Hassan Kukah Biography and Educational Background

Matthew Hassan Kukah was born on the 31st of August, 1952 in Anchuna, Ikulu Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf local government area of Kaduna State. He had his primary education at St. Fidelis Primary School, Zagom. 

He further enrolled at the St. Joseph Minor Seminary, Zaria, before proceeding to St. Augustine Major Seminary Jos, Plateau State, where he studied Philosophy and Theology. He also holds a diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Ibadan.

Bishop Kukah further obtained a Bachelor of Divinity at the Pontifical Urban University, Rome in 1976. This was followed by a Master's degree in Peace Studies at the University of Bradford, United Kingdom.

Career

• Bishop Kukah was ordained a Catholic Priest on December 19, 1976.  
• Between 1977-1978, he served as the associate Parish Priest, Kaduna
• In 1982, he became the Cardinal’s Special Assistant, Abuja Catholic Church, a position he held until 1993
• He served as the Secretary-General of the Catholic Bishops Conference from 1994-2000
• From 2004-2011, he was the Vicar-General, Archdiocese of Kaduna
• He got ordained as the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese in 2011
• In 2012, Bishop Kukah was made the Chairman, Committee on Inter-religious Dialogue, Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Nigeria
• The same 2012, he was also made the Chairman, Committee on Inter-religious Dialogue, Regional Episcopal Conference of West African, RECOWA
• Kukah is also a Member, Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, Vatican City (2012-present)
