Tanko Muhammad Biography and Educational Background

Tanko Muhammad was born on the 31 December 1953 in Bauchi State, Nigeria. He hails from Doguwa, Giade Local Government of Bauchi State.

Tanko had his primary education at Giade Primary School before attending Government Secondary School, Azare where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate in 1973. He then proceeded to Abdullahi Bayero University College, Kano for his IJMB from 1975 to 1976.

He further gained admission to study at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained an LL.B. degree in Islamic law in 1980. He attended Nigerian Law School from 1980 to 1981. He also holds an LL.M. degree (1985) and a PhD (1998) in law from the same university.

Career

Upon finishing from the Nigerian Law School in 1981, Hon. Justice I. T. Muhammad, CFR was appointed as Magistrate Grade II in 1982 to 1984 with Bauchi State Judiciary. He rose to Senior Magistrate Grade II from 1984 to 1986.

In 1989, he was appointed as Chief Magistrate of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, a position he held until 1991 when he became a Judge at the Bauchi State Sharia Court of Appeal. 

He served in that capacity for two years before he was appointed to the bench of the Nigerian courts of appeal as Justice in 1993. He held this position for thirteen years before he was appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2006 but was sworn in on 7 January 2007.

Following Justice Walter Onnoghen's suspension as the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Tanko Muhammad in Acting capacity.

Personal Life

On December 2020, some top media houses reported that Justice Tanko had tested positive for COVID-19. Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, a member of the Supreme Court was also quoted to have said that he was receiving treatment.
Tanko Muhammad's spokesman denied the report in less than 24 hours after it went viral.
