Larry Madowo Biography and Educational Background

Larry Madowo was born on the 14th of July, 1987 in Siaya, Kenya. He grew up in various parts of Kenya, including Nairobi, Siaya and Kisumu. He had his primary education at Usingo and Karapul primary schools, after which he enrolled at the St Gabriel's Seminary.

Larry had intended to become a Catholic priest, but by the time he had finished high school he changed. He studied journalism in college.

In 2006, Larry Madowo enrolled at Daystar University for a Communication degree. In 2007, he interned for a vernacular radio station Bahasha FM reading news in English.

Career

Larry Madowo dropped out of college after a year plus to take a job at Kenya Television Network. In less than three years of working at the station, he had already become a household name in Kenya.

In May 2012, he joined the CNBC Africa as one of the main anchors of the market day shows Open Exchange, Power Lunch and Closing Bell. He left CNBC Africa after working there for 8 months and in December 2012, went back to NTV as the technology editor and news anchor.

He returned back to Daystar University for his degree, graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree.

During Madowo's second time at NTV Kenya, he also freelanced for various global news outlets including the BBC, France 24 English, Public Radio International and CNN International.

In 2018, he joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as Business Editor of the BBC News Africa. He led a team of business journalists based in Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar and London. He has appeared as a reporter or commentator on African business across BBC World Service Radio, BBC World TV, BBC Radio 4, amongst others. 

Madowo also briefly contributed to the Guardian US and the BBC.

He has interviewed some of the world's most prominent people including presidents, world-famous artists, global CEOs and Sophia the Robot.

Awards and Recognitions

• In June 2020, Larry Madowo was nominated as a One Young World Journalist of the Year
• He has twice, been named among the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine
• Madowo was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in March 2020
• A radio documentary he presented on the Chinese-built railway in Kenya won the Daily Journalism (Single Report) category at the 2019 Association of International Broadcasting Awards on 6 November 2019
• Madowo was in 9th April 2019 named among the 2019-2020 Knight-Bagehot Fellows at Columbia University
• In December 2020, Madowo became the first Black person to deliver the Peter Stursberg Foreign Correspondents Lecture at Canada's Carleton University

Personal Life

Even though Larry Madowo identifies as a Christian, he has been quoted before saying that there is probably no God while defending atheists. He is also critical of the religious in Kenya, having written in his old Daily Nation column "Atheists don’t harm anyone, let them be!".

He is not married yet and has no known pets or children.
