Ndubuisi Kanu was a Nigerian naval officer who served as the military governor of Imo State, Nigeria during General Olusegun Obasanjo's military regime. He also served as the governor of Lagos State from 1977 till July 1978. Upon his retirement, Kanu founded RANGK LTD, a maritime consultancy where he also served as the Chairman. He reportedly died on the 13th of January, 2021 at the age of 77.

Ndubuisi Kanu Biography and Naval Career

Ndubuisi Kanu was born on the 3rd of November, 1943 in Abia State, Nigeria. Upon joining the navy, he travelled to India for his cadet training. His naval career included positions in Personnel, Logistics and Training. 

He got appointed as the military governor of Imo State, Nigeria in March 1976 during the General Olusegun Obasanjo's military regime. In 1977, he got transferred to Lagos State, leaving office in July 1978.

Kanu holds honorary Doctorate Degrees from the Imo State University and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

Post-retirement

Upon his retirement from the Navy, Ndubuisi Kanu joined the pro-democracy movement and played a leading role in the agitation for the actualization of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.

In May 2008, he called for a return to true federalism in Nigeria.

He was among leaders who spoke in January 2010 at a Lagos rally of the Save Nigeria Group calling for Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan be made acting president during President Umaru Yar'Adua's illness.

Other Endeavours

Retired Real Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu founded the RANGK LTD, a maritime consultancy which he also served as the chairman. He also served as the Chairman of the Ohaneze Transition Caretaker Committee (OTC) and was Director of Fidelity Bank PLC.

Ndubuisi Kanu was a highly respected member of National Democratic Coalition NADECO, the pro-democracy group, which fought for the revalidation of the June 12, 1993, presidential election which was believed to have been won by the late Moshood Abiola.

Retired Real Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu has married three times and has ten children – Simone, Audrey, Kelly, Karen, Paula, Jeffery, Vanessa, Samantha, Laura and Stephen.

Until his death in January 13, 2021, he was married to Gladys Ndubuisi-Kanu.
