Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan was born on the 20th of November, 1957 in the region of the Niger delta in what is now Bayelsa State. His parents, Lawrence Ebele Jonathan and Eunice Jonathan are Christians, and Goodluck continued with the path.
He had his primary and secondary education in Bayelsa State, before proceeding to the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Zoology in 1981.
In 1985, he obtained a master's degree in hydrobiology and fisheries biology before going for his Ph.D in zoology.

Political Career

Goodluck Jonathan worked as an education inspector, a lecturer and an environmental-protection officer prior to his entry into politics. His political career however begun in the late 1990s when he became involved with the nascent People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In 1999, he was elected deputy governor of Bayelsa State under the PDP and he served in the position until 2005 when he was elevated to the governorship, following the impeachment of the then Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha by the Bayelsa State Assembly over charges relating to corruption.

In 2007, PDP’s presidential candidate, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua selected Jonathan  as his running mate. He and Yar’Adua were elected in April and inaugurated in May.

Vice President Jonathan became the acting president on February 9, 2010 following  President Yar’Adua’s prolonged treatment in Saudi Arabia. On May 6, 2010, he was sworn in as president after the unforeseen and unfortunate death of President Yar’ Adua on May 5, 2010.

In 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan vied for the presidency as the PDP’s candidate and was elected president, a position he held until 2015 when the APC's Muhammadu Buhari defeated him by a total of 2.57 million votes

Personal Life

Goodluck Jonathan is married to Dame Jonathan Patience and they have two children, Ariwera (Son) and Aruabai (daughter). He's a Christian by religion, but not much is known about his denomination. He has been spotted attending services in several Christian denominations like Anglican, the Lord’s Chosen and Winners' Chapel.
