Prof Ibidapo Obe Biography and Educational Background

Prof Ibidapo Obe was born on the 5th of July, 1949 at Ile Ife, Osun State Nigeria. He had his primary education at  Lagos Street African Church Primary School, Ebute-Metta. For his secondary education, he attended Obokun High School/Ilesa Grammar School and later, Igbobi College, Yaba.

He also gained admission to study at the University of Lagos (UniLag), where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. He further obtained a Master of Mathematics [M. Maths] degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science and a PhD in Civil Engineering with specialization in Applied Mechanics/System from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. 

Career

Ibidapo-obe was also a Commonwealth Scholar (Canada) (1972-1976); and NSERC/CIDA (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council/Canadian International Development Agency and a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar (1980 -1981).

At UniLag, he served as a Graduate Assistant before becoming a professor. He was also the Head of the Engineering Analysis Unit (1991 - 1995) and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Lagos, (1995 - 1999).

From 1980 to 1981, Prof Ibidapo Obe served as a Visiting Research Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA.

In 2000, he was appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UniLag in April 2000. In September 2000, he became the acting vice-chancellor, serving until April 2002. He was appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor on 1st May 2002 and successfully served until the end of his tenure on 30th April 2007.

In 2007, Prof Ibidapo Obe was a Visiting Research Professor at Texas Southern University in Houston, USA.

He reportedly died on the 3rd of January 2021 from COVID19 complication.
