What exactly is ISO Standards?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a globally recognized non-governmental organization that creates standards for ensuring efficiency, security, quality and consistency in numerous segments of production and technology.

Some ISO standards provide simple codes or measurements for seamless communication. How things are done in a particular industry or expect other standards to achieve a specific goal. These standards cover everything like environment management, food safety and information technology. More than 23,000 ISO standards are in use today. International technical experts committee having 165 member nations develops and manages each standard.

How to get ISO Certification?

The International Organization for Standards never certifies any organizations. ISO only establishes and manages the standards. Audits, certifications and accreditations are carried out by other firms.

Once the organization deems that it meets the ISO standard norms, it engages a third party who is accredited to examine and issue the certificate of ISO. These third parties are ISO Certification firms or registrars.

Every registrar you engage must be properly authorized. Seek authorization from the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), a firm which works together with International Organization for Standardization. Certification by an IAF authorized registrar is widely accepted and acknowledged. These may not be registrants from other accrediting bodies.

What is ISO Certification?

Well, officially "ISO certified" has no meaning. There are so various ISO standards that you have to particularize an ISO family or standard number to have a meaning.

However, once attached to the standard, "ISO certified" is usually utilized as an abbreviation for a situation or two.

• An organization with proven compliance with ISO standards
• A person who is eligible and is qualified for performing ISO Audit.

Well, only companies can be ISO certified, so the first definition is correct.

However, you may hear people who use both the terms.

Understanding ISO 9001:

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded in 1946 to ensure the global coordination and unification of standards related to industries.
At that time it was initiated with just 25 members from different countries. Currently, ISO has nearly 22,263 standards related to technology and production. As per the ISO website, "Today there are more than one million organizations or businesses in more than 170 countries that are ISO 9001 certified."

Both customers and organizations can leverage the advantages from ISO certification and use ISO certified companies. ISO 9001 can be utilized to make use of the fact that end-users can get the advantage from services and goods consistently. ISO is not only limited to production, but also covers food and healthcare safety, which is worth noting. To see the ISO mark on products related to consumers is even more common.

Steps to earn ISO 9001 Certification:

Every organization has different points of starting and has different QMS. As such, every certified trip is slightly different. However, the overall outline will be the same.

Step 1: Finalize earning ISO 9001 Certification:

It is a huge undertaking to implement an ISO-compliant QMS. The procedure of certification can be vast and costly.

Right from first-line employees to C-suite, it is crucial to be on board before making your way to journey.
This is especially crucial for the version ISO 9001:2015 standard. In the past, anyone could only earn a certificate via the cookie documentation, but recent versions highlight what people actually do, not just what they write. ISO 9001:2015 also requires the active involvement of senior management.

To make the right decision, you need the help of one who knows the ISO 9000 standard and the procedure of developing a robust system.

Some companies select to negotiate with external experts, while others build on resources internally.

This could be recruiting ISO experienced professionals or the one who is an existing employee for lead auditor iso 9001 training.

Step 2: Develop and Execute ISO Compliant QMS:

Calling this one step a bit misleading as there are actually many interconnected steps including:

Gather information: Identify key processes, define optimum performance, perform analysis of gap, perform analysis of risk, create methodologies to measure development, and more.

ISO training: Train internal auditors so that you can implement and audit system efficiently and transparently, train managers enough to achieve results, and help employees know the reasons for upcoming changes.

Start with standardization: Process development and/editing, SOP's documentation, system creation for QMS process reporting.

Implementation of changes: Employee retention, ensuring compliance of procedures with documentation, revision of procedures and documentation if necessary.

You will require one full cycle of production with the latest system. In so many cases, you will need various cycles of production as you adjust and learn.

Step 3: Execute An Internal Audit:

The purpose of an internal audit is to evaluate the efficacy related to the quality management system and verify compliance with ISO standards.

As per the results of internal audit, you have to implement the right processes, actions and update the documentation as per the report.

Step 4: Signup for ISO 9001 Certification:

Once you are sure that requirement of QMS meets ISO 9001:2015, arrange an external audit by an experienced authorized registrar. If all goes well, a certificate will be issued to you.

STEP 5: Constantly Renew and Improve Certification:

ISO 9001 certificate renewal is not mandatory, but you must renew your status at least every 3 years to apply for a certificate.

Since the ISO 9001 standard requires constant improvement, recertification will not be tough as long as you continue with the system.
