In the United States, he first studied at the Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois and proceeded to Chicago State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1979.
After the completion of his education, he worked worked for the American companies Deloitte, Arthur Andersen, GTE Services Corporation and Haskins, & Sells before returning to Nigeria in 1983. On returning to Nigeria, he joined Mobil Oil Nigeria and after some time, became an executive of the company.
Early Political Career
Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu began his political career in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party. He was elected to the Nigerian Senate, representing the Lagos West constituency in the short-lived Nigerian Third Republic.
On 12th of June 1993 after the presidential elections' results were annulled, Bola Tinubu Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition (NDC). The NDC was a group that mobilized support for the recognition of the June 12th results and restoration of democracy.In 1994 he went into exile and returned to Nigeria after the death of Sani Abacha in 1998, which ushered in a transition to civilian rule.
In the 1999 run-up elections, Bola Tinubu was a protégé of Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo. He won the primaries for the Lagos State gubernatorial elections under AD and in competition with Wahab Dosunmu and Funsho Williams. In January 1999, contested for the position of Executive Governor of Lagos State and was elected.
After being sworn in as the governor of Lagos State, he promised 10,000 housing units for the poor. During his eight-years tenure as the governor, he made huge investments in education in Lagos State. He also initiated the construction of new roads in order to meet the needs of the fast-growing population of Lagos.
In April 2003, he was re-elected to the office alongside a new deputy governor, Femi Pedro. Their relations however become tense after Pedro declared his intention to run for the gubernatorial elections.
Femi Pedro defected to the Labour Party after withdrawing his name on the eve of the party nomination but still retained his position as the deputy governor. Tinubu's tenure however ended in May 2007 and Babatunde Fashola (his former chief of staff) of the Action Congress took office.
Personal Life
He lost his son Jide Tinubu to cardiac arrest in London on 31st October. H e is a devoted Muslim.
