Biography of Laolu Senbanjo

Laolu Senbanjo was born on the 19th of October, 1980 in Ilorin, Kwara State to Yoruba parents. His father was a lawyer while his mother was a nurse and he grew up performing in my church’s choir. While in school he formed Light and Fire, a music group that performed original songs and covers.

Education And Career

Laolu Senbanjo studied law at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. According to an interview  by the TheNationOnlineNG.net, he wanted to drop out of law school during his second year but persisted and got his degree in 2005.
After graduating from the law school, Senbanjo started working as a human rights lawyer for five years. He spent his final three years working as a senior legal officer focusing on women and children's rights at the National Human Rights Commission. He travelled different villages and schools in the northern Nigeria educating men and women on why children should be in school.
"I knew if I pursued a career in the arts, I'd have to live with the fact that some people in my hometown might never talk to me again,"
said Senbanjo in an interview with 99U.
Despite this, he quit his job as a legal officer and started an art gallery in Abuja, Nigeria. In 2013, Senbanjo moved to Brooklyn, NY to pursue his art career.
According to the interview, Laolu Senbanjo said that 'The Sacred Art of the Ori' grew from a term he coined Afromysterics to mean the mystery of the African thought pattern. He uses the symbols and patterns to let the world into the Yoruba artistic style, drawing from Yoruba myths and legends. 
He then translates them on using the human body as his canvas while painting the designs on the muse to allow them to have an experience where they encounter a path to their destiny.
