Idowu Philips was born on the 16th of October 1942 in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. She got her stage name from the theatre group of Sir Hubert Ogunde, who died in 1990. The name 'Iya Rainbow' stems from 'Osumare' (meaning 'rainbow' in English).Before venturing fully into Nollywood, Iya Rainbow worked as a certified nurse in general hospitals in Nigeria for several years and occasionally acted in theatre. It was after her husband's death that she ventured into full-time acting. He husband Augustine Ayanfemi Phillips worked closely with Sir Herbert Ogunde, the late patriarch of Nigerian Film Industry.

Idowu Philips had her early primary and secondary school education at Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. This is probably the reason why she speaks Yoruba so fluently.After completing her secondary school education, she secured admission to study at a nursing school.
