Prior to his venturing into politics, Abiola Ajimobi worked as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company a subsidiary of Shell Petroleum, Nigeria. A job he left in 2002 to contest as a Senator.

Abiola Ajimobi Biography, Date Of Birth, Early Life, Family And Education

Abiola Ajimobi was born on the 16th of December, 1949 to the Ajimobi of Ibadan at Oja-Oba, Ibadan. Abiola's father, Pa Ajimobi, was an Honourable member of the House of Assembly in the Old Western Region. His grandfather was Sobaloju of Ibadan Land, his uncle, Hon. N.A. Ajimobi was minister of works and transport in the Western Region.

Abiola Ajimobi started his primary education Saint Patricks Primary School, Oke-Padre in Ibadan but later changed to Ibadan City Council Primary School, Aperin. He further enrolled at Lagelu Grammar School for his secondary education. While in high school, Abiola was active in footballing, table tennis and athletics, he also served as the school’s games prefect.

Abiola Ajimobi moved to the United States of America for his university education. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration and Finance at the State University of New York, in Buffalo, New York. His MBA was in Operations Research and Marketing with a concentration in Finance at Governors State University, University Park, Illinois.

Professional Career


In 1977, Ajimobi joined Management and Industrial Consulting firm as a Senior Consultant upon returning to Nigeria. He also worked briefly with Modulor Group before joining Nestle Foods PLC. as the Operations Controller and later as Marketing Controller.

In 1979, he started working with National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company a subsidiary of Shell Petroleum, Nigeria as the Consumer Products Manager. Thanks to his performance at the organization, he was quickly promoted to the level of Divisional Manager, and later to head a newly created Corporate Credit division reporting directly to the Managing director.

In 1993, Ajimobi was posted on an international assignment to Shell International storage company of Togo, serving the whole of West Africa as Chief Executive. He returned to Nigeria in 1995 and was appointed in 1996 as Oil Sales Manager.

Ajimobi's last appointment before his voluntary retirement after 26 years of service in the Oil industry was as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company. He voluntarily retired in 2003 to pursue a political career.

Politics

Abiola Ajimobi was elected a Senator of the Republic of Nigeria in 2003. He was a principal officer in the Senate, serving as the Deputy Minority leader of the Senate.
In 2007, he contested the gubernatorial election under the umbrella of the All Nigeria Peoples Party but lost. In 2011, he contested again for the position but this time, under the Action Congress of Nigeria and won.
In 2015, he again contested for a second term and won, defeating two of his predecessors in office, Christopher Alao Akala and Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. He contested under the umbrella of the All Progressive Congress(APC).
On 28 September 2018, Ajimobi was elected as the APC Oyo South senatorial candidate. On March 9, 2019, he lost the Oyo South senatorial district seat to PDP's Kola Balogun.

Personal Life

Abiola Ajimobi got married to Mrs Florence Ajimobi in 1980 and they have five children, Abisola Kolapo-Kola, Abolaji Ajimobi, Abimbola Ajimobi, Ajibola Ajmobi and Ajijola Oluwa Ajimobi. His first daughter Abisola Kola-Daisi is an entrepreneur and founder of Florence H Luxury.
Ajimobi died on Thursday, 25th of June, 2020 due to underlying health conditions, which was complicated by Covid-19. He was buried on Sunday according to the Islamic rites.
