Kayode Fayemi is a Nigerian lecturer, journalist and politician who is currently serving as the  Executive Governor of Ekiti State.
He had previously held the office of the Governor of Ekiti State between 2010 and 2014 before losing to Ayo Fayose of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). In 2018, he resigned as the Minister of Solid Minerals Development to contest again for the Ekiti State governorship election and won.

John Olukayode Fayemi was born on the 9th of February, 1965. While speaking during a thanksgiving service for his 55th birthday, he described himself as a beneficiary of God’s generosity, revealing that his parents thought he was not going to live long. According to him, his parents named him 'Folorunso' (meaning under God's protection) after they lost two children in quick succession.

Kayode Fayemi started his primary education in Ekiti State. Between 1975-1980, he attended Christ's School Ado Ekiti for his secondary education. He further gained admission into the Universities of Lagos to study History, Politics and International Relations. He also has a degree from the Obafemi Awolowo University.
Fayemi obtained his Doctorate in War Studies from the King's College, University of London, England, specializing in civil-military relations.

Career

Kayode Fayemi formerly worked as a lecturer, journalist, researcher and Strategy Development adviser in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He has lectured in Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia.
In 1986, he started working as a reporter with The Guardian & City Tempo Newspapers, Lagos, Nigeria. Between 1991 -1993, he worked as the Research Officer, African Research and Information Bureau, London. In 1995, he started serving as the Secretary-General, Media Empowerment for Africa (The Radio Foundation).
Kayode Fayemi also served as the Director for Democracy & Development, a research and training institution dedicated to the study and promotion of democratic development, peace-building and human security in Africa. 
He has also served as an adviser on transitional justice, regional integration, constitutionalism, security sector reform and civil-military relations issues to various governments, inter-governmental institutions and development agencies.

Dr Fayemi serves on numerous Boards including the Governing Board of the Open Society Justice Institute, African Security Sector Network, Baobab for Women’s Human Rights and on the Advisory Board of the Global Facilitation Network on Security Sector Reform and on the Management Culture Board of the ECOWAS Secretariat.

Kayode Fayemi is a Fellow of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Ibadan, Adjunct Professor of Security Studies at the African Centre for Strategic Studies, National Defense University, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., USA. He was also a Visiting Professor in the African Studies Programme at Northwestern University, Evanston, USA in 2004. 

Governorship campaign

On 15 October 2010, Kayode Fayemi was declared the duly elected Governor of Ekiti State by the Appeal Court after three and a half years fighting through the legal system.
In 2014, he ran for the second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to the previous governor Ayodele Fayose.
In July 2018, he resigned as the Minister of Solid Minerals Development to recontest the second term as Ekiti state governor and won by 19,345 votes against the PDP's Kolapo Olusola Eleka who was second.
He is currently the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF after being unanimously elected by the governors to lead the forum till 2021.
