Babagana Umara Zulum was born on the 26th of August, 1969  in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State. Growing up wasn't so rosy for him, as he had to trek a distance of over 7 km to the school daily. He also covered the same distance to help his father, who was a peasant farmer on his farm."
He had his elementary schooling in Mafa Primary School from 1975 to 1980. After obtaining his first school leaving certificate, Babagana proceeded to the Government Secondary School, Monguno for his secondary education, graduating in 1985.

He further secured admission to study at the University of Maiduguri (UniMaid). While at UniMaid, he had to work as a commercial taxi driver in order to foot his school fees, feeding, accommodation and other bills. He graduated from UniMaid with a degree in Agriculture Engineering and proceeded to Katsina State, where he underwent the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Katsina State Polytechnic.

Babagana didn't just end at the Bachelor's degree, as he quickly proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his Master's degree. He also extended his commercial driving trade to Lagos, precisely at Alaba-Rago to raise his tuition fees for his MSc program, three weeks after the resumption.

In 2005, he enrolled for a PhD in Soil and Water Engineering with the University of Maiduguri which he completed in 2009. He quickly moved through the ranks and files within the university community until his appointment as Professor in 2014.

Career and Politics

Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum's first appointment was in 1989 when he was made an Assistant Technical Officer in the State's Ministry of Agriculture. A year later, he was moved into Borno State Unified Local Government Service as Senior Field Overseer and later Principal Water Engineer.

In 2000, Babagana took up an appointment with the University of Maiduguri as an assistant Lecturer. He quickly moved through the ranks and files within the university community until his appointment as Professor. He also served as the Deputy Dean and Acting Dean, Faculty of Engineering in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

In 2011, Babagana Umara was appointed the Rector of Ramat Polytechnic while still retaining his teaching position in the University of Maiduguri. He was made appointed a professor in 2014.

In 2015, Prof. Zulum was made Commissioner of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement by Governor Kashim Shetima of Borno State, a position he held till 2018.
