Online Learning Is Growing, So Are Proctors

Online learning is growing exponentially. And an important aspect of learning is taking test. That’s where proctors come.

Invigilators, as they are commonly called, now seat behind screens, and take note of unwarranted activities. If found anything suspicious, tests are marked invalid and appropriate actions are taken. This sort of invigilation, or online proctoring service, is getting increasingly common as online learning is growing

Proctoring service use artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other sophisticated technologies to offer these services.

What is Online Proctoring?

Like physical invigilation, online tests can be easily monitored with the help of applications. The applications identify candidates through facial recognition, fingerprints, or voice recognition using artificial intelligence.

Proctoring tools monitor test takers throughout a test session and prohibit unwarranted activities such as opening new browser tabs, seeking assistance from others, or any activity that would be considered cheating. Upon completion of a test, proctoring tools access results too, and send the result to examiner. Online proctored exam doesn’t require manual correction.

Types of Proctoring Service

Proctoring services are available under three types --

1. Online proctoring–

In this, a test-taker is under constant supervision of computer. Test-takers are required to prove their identity through facial recognition, key strokes, or finger prints. Any suspicious activity results in test suspension and a report is sent to examiner. Proctors oversee test-takers through web cam.

2. Recorded proctoring –

The test session is recorded, which can be used to see any signs of cheating in case of doubts.

3. Automated proctoring service –

This is the most commonly used type of proctoring service. Test sessions are automated to detect unwarranted activities. Upon detection of any suspicious activity, tests end automatically. The service use audio and video analytics to detect activities. It can capture unusual eye movement to people leaving or entering a place. As there’s no need of a physical proctor, automated proctoring service is easily scalable compared to other types of proctoring.

Proctoring Service And Online learning

Proctoring service adds immense value to online learning by administering tests. According to Babson Research Group, there were 6.3 million people who took at least one online course. As online learning grows and scales, proctoring services will be even more beneficial. A testament to this is the growth of proctoring services in the market. According to Babson Research Group, the market for online proctoring service is $19 billion in 2019.

As online learning picks up more traction, the use of proctoring service too will rise. The technology enabling most proctoring services is still in its raw forms, which forecasts greater scope of development for proctoring. As technologies such as facial recognition mature, which is brain and heart of online proctoring, the service is bound to heavily impact test-taking.

Several proctoring services are out in the market. Each dominating a significant part of online learning market.
