Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai was born on the 16th of February, 1960 in Daudawa, Northern Region, British Nigeria (now Daudawa, Nigeria). His uncle sponsored his early education after his father died when he was just 8 years old.
On completing his primary education, El-Rufai enrolled in the prominent Barewa College. He graduated from college in 1976. He was the best in his set, and won the "Barewa Old Boys' Association Academic Achievement" Trophy.
El-Rufai further gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he received a bachelor's degree in quantity surveying. He also has a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
He added post-graduate programs at the famed Harvard Business School and Georgetown University and an LL.B degree with Second Class Honors, Upper Division, from the University of London.

Political Career

On completing school, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and three other partners established a Quantity Surveying and Project Management Consulting firm. The firm was very successful, and in fact, made him a multi-millionaire even before his foray into government work.

Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai's first step into politics was in 1999 when he got appointed as the Director-General of The Bureau of Public Enterprises, Nigeria’s head privatization agency. But before then, he had already served as an adviser under the transition government of General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Between 1999 and 2003, he spearheaded the successful privatization of many government-owned companies.

On July 2003, El-Rufai started serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, a post he held until May 2007 when the late President Umaru Yar’adua appointed him to the National Energy Council. He resigned from the position in 2008.

In 2014, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai ran for the APC governorship primaries and emerged as the party's candidate for Governor of Kaduna State. He further won the election, defeating the incumbent Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero the candidate of the People's Democratic Party after securing over 1.1 million votes.
On March 2019, he was re-elected defeating the PDP opposition by over 200,000 votes.

Personal Life

Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai is married to three wives; Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, Ummi El-Rufai and Asia El–Rufai. Not much is known about them, except Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, who is a popular novelist and writer.
El-Rufai's children include Hamza, Yasmin, Mustapha, Bilkisu and Ahmed El-Rufai. He is also a devoted Muslim.

Philanthropy

In 2013, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and his wife, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai set up Yasmin El-Rufai Foundation (YELF) to honour her daughter who died of an epileptic seizure in her flat in London in November 2011.
The literary nonprofit was launched with the primary goal of nurturing creativity in children, "particularly the girl child, between the ages of eight and 19" and young/adult women, providing them "resources with teachers and the books that they need to enhance their literacy."
