Majek Fashek Biography, Date Of Birth, Early Life, Family And Education

Born March 2020 in Edo State, Nigeria, Majekodunmi Fasheke (Majek Fashek) had his early primary and secondary school in Edo Old Bendel State. His mother was from the Old Bendel while his father was from Osun State, Western Nigeria but identifies with his Benin roots.

After his parents' separation, Fashek remained in Benin City with his mother. Soon after, he joined the choir in his local Aladura church and learned to play the trumpet and guitar whilst composing songs for the choir.

Music Career

Majek Fashek started his music career in the 1980s as a member of Benin-based reggae group Jastix, going by the stage name Rajesh Kanal. He joined Jastix with musicians Black Rice Osagie, Amos McRoy Gregg,  and later Ras Kimono. The group gained popularly as the in-house band on the NTA Benin show Music Panorama.

Majek began his career as a solo artist in 1998 with the performing name Majek Fashek after The Jastix disbanded. After a while, he signed a deal with the Tabansi Records under which he released his debut album 'Prisoner of Conscience'. The album shot him into the limelight and established him as Nigeria’s top reggae artist.

Majek Fashek's song, 'Send Down The Rain' became the most popular song of 1989 having won over six PMAN awards, including; Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Reggae Artist of the Year among others.

In late 1989, he released his 'I&I Experience' album under the Tabansi Label. The album included the anti-apartheid anthem Free Africa, Free Mandela which sampled Steam's Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.

In the early 1990s, he left Tabnsi Records and went on to sign with CBS Nigeria, a label he later left to move to Island Records’ Mango imprint, a division of Island Records accustomed to marketing reggae internationally. 

Under Sony Nigeria, he released the album  So Long Too Long in 1991. It was included on Putumayo World Music‘s first album. In 1994, Flame Tree released “The Best of Majek Fashek.”

Acting career:

Asides music, Majek Fashek was also into other ventures. In 2000, he played a supporting role in the Nollywood film 'Mark of the Beast' and starred in a commercial for non-alcoholic beverage Diamalt.

He was also into comedies. During Ayo Makun's 2016 show which took place in Eko Hotel Hall, Lagos, he performed to an audience of over 10,000.

Personal Life and Death

Majek Fashek was married to Rita Fashek and they had four children, before divorcing. Rita Fashek served as his muse for the song 'Without You'. In 2015, many news outlets reported that Fashek was bankrupt and battling drug addiction. He was admitted into a drug rehabilitation centre in Abuja after admitting that he needed help and returned back to music after his recovery.

In 2019, rumours of Fashek's death surfaced on the internet but they were quickly quelled by his manager, confirming that he had been critically ill and hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, London. He also mentioned that he (Fashek) was in dire need of financial assistance. Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Femi Otedola pledged to cover all the singer’s medical expenses.

On the 2nd of June, 2020, Majek Fashek died in his sleep after battling esophageal cancer. The death was confirmed by his manager, Omenka Uzoma on the singer's Instagram handle.
