Career and Politics

After being called to the bar, Femi Gbajabiamila first worked for the law firm, Bentley Edu & Co., in Lagos before establishing his own law firm, Femi Gbaja & Co. He further earned his Juris Doctor from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School in Georgia, USA, passed the Georgian bar exam in 2001, and set up a law firm in Atlanta.
While in the United States, he actively participated in the election of Bill Campbell who later went on to become Mayor of Atlanta.

Femi Gbajabiamila returned to Nigerian and contested and won the election to represent the Surulere I constituency of Lagos State (see Nigerian National Assembly delegation from Lagos) in the House of Representatives in 2003. He was re-elected in 2007 and elected as Action Congress (AC) leader and Minority Whip of the House.

In 2011, Gbaja Biamila contested and won a third term on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). He was again re-elected ACN leader and leader of the opposition in the House.

He was, however, elected speaker in the 9th National Assembly, House of Representative, with 283 votes, while his opponent Mohammed Umar Bago, came Second with 78 votes.

Controversies

Femi Gbajabiamila stirred controversies when he gifted his wife, Salamatu Gbajabiamila a Mercedes G-Wagon, which costs in the region of $300,000, for her 50th birthday. Considering his annual official salary of $25,000, he'd need to save for 12 years to be able to afford such a car.
This also excluded a 1-day lavish party that he threw in celebration of the event, which trended for weeks on the Nigerian social media space.
