Godswill Akpabio was born on the 9th of December, 1962 in Ukana, Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He was raised by him Mum,  Lucy Obot Akpabio after losing his father at a very early age.
Godswill started his early education at Methodist Primary School, Ukana. After obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate, he proceeded to the Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. While at FGC, Akpabio was appointed the Senior Prefect.
Akpabio further gained admission to study at the University of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River State. While in school, he was elected as the speaker of the parliamentary year.

Career

Godswill Akpabio worked briefly as a teacher, and then as an associate partner with Paul Usoro and Co., a law firm in Nigeria.
He further got a job at the EMIS Telecoms Limited, a wireless telecommunications company in Lagos, Nigeria where he quickly rose to the position of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer.

In 2002, Obong Victor Attah the then Governor of Akwa Ibom State appointed him as the Honourable Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources. He served in three different ministries in the state between 2002 and 2006. The first was as the Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources, followed by Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He also served as the Commissioner for Lands and Housing.

His first step into politics was in 2006 when he contested for the governorship of Akwa Ibom State under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He defeated 57 other aspirants to emerge the party's candidate. 

He further went ahead to emerge winner in the 2007 governorship election after receiving massive during the election. He was re-elected for a second term in office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 2011. While serving as governor, he was also elected Chairman of the newly formed PDP Governors Forum.

In 2015, Godswill Akpabio contested and won the Senate seat of the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District to represent the district in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He contested again under the PDP platform. He was announced by the Senate President as Senate Minority Leader on 28th July 2015.

In August 2018, Sen. Akpabio defected from the PDP to the All Progressive Congress (APC). This was followed by his resignation as the Senate Minority Leader.

He is currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Minister for Niger Delta Affairs after being sworn in on August 2019. He was earlier recommended by President Buhari and screened by the Nigerian Senate for the appointment.

Personal Life

Godswill Akpabio is happily married to Ekaette Unoma Akpabio and the marriage is blessed with five children. Unoma Akpabio is the founder of Family Life Enhancement Initiative (FLEI).
Sen. Akpabio is a devoted Christain and member of the Roman Catholic Church.
