Douye Diri was born on the 4th of June, 1959 in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. He started his early primary education at Okoro Primary School, Sampou and concluded it at Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School, Kaiama in 1977.
After obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate, he enrolled at the Government Secondary School, Odi in Bayelsa. He further proceeded to the College of Education, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State where he bagged his National Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1985.
Douye also gained admission to study Political Science at the University of Port-Harcourt, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelors of Education (B.Ed) Degree.

Political Career

Prior to his contesting as the governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri had already served as the senator representing Bayelsa Central senatorial district of Bayelsa State at the Nigerian 9th National Assembly.

He was sworn-in as governor on 14th February 2020 following the nullification of the 2019 Bayelsa State gubernatorial elections on grounds that the running mate of the actual winner of the election, David Lyon, submitted a fake certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He was however sacked as governor on the 17th of August, in a majority judgment delivered by Justice Yunusa Musa in the petition brought before it by the Advance National Democratic Party (ANDP), the tribunal ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) erred when it excluded the party from the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

INEC has now been ordered to conduct a fresh governorship election in Bayelsa State within 90 days; with the ANDP participating this time.
