Mohammed Adamu was born on the 17th of September, 1961 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. After completing his elementary and secondary education, he gained admission to study Geography at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
He enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 1987 after obtaining a bachelor's degree (Hons) from ABU.

In 1983, he enrolled for the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). During the one-year service, he taught Geography at Government Teachers College, Wamba, Plateau State. In 1984, he was appointed as Geography tutor and later promoted to Vice Principal at Government Day Secondary School, Gunduma, Keffi, Plateau State, but presently in Nasarawa State.

In 2010, Ag. IGP Adamu obtained a master's degree in International Criminal Justice System from the University of Portsmouth, England. In 2018, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in International Relations by Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu in recognition of his international professional exposure.

Career

Mohammed Abubakar Adamu's career in the Nigeria Police Force commenced in 1986 when he joined the Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and was trained at the Police College, Ikeja.

In his early years at the Force, he worked as the Divisional Crime Officer and Administrative Officer at the Mgbidi Police Station, Mgbidi, Imo State. He also served as the as a detective at the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos and Officer in charge of General Investigation, Nigeria Police Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar.

Ag. IGP Adamu served as the Director, Peacekeeping and Training, Force Headquarters, Abuja between 2007 to 2010. he was later deployed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of Administration in Ekiti State Command.

In 2012, he started serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Kaduna State Police Command, a position he held until 2013 when he was deployed as the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Police Command. He also served as the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 Police Headquarters, Benin-City between 2016 to 2017.

He also has extensive international experience, having worked at Interpol's NCB in Lagos from 1989-1997. He was also the first Nigerian to be seconded to Interpol General Secretariat, Lyon in 1997 where he served as a specialized officer in Economic and Financial Crime, Sub-directorate from 1997- 2002. 

In 2002, Mohammed Adamu became the first black African to be appointed Assistant Director in charge of African Sub-Directorate, a position he held till 2005. 

On January 2019, he was appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police by President Muhammadu Buhari to replace Ibrahim Kpotun Idris who previously handled the position.
