Ibukun Awosika was born on the 24th of December, 1962 into the family of Abdulmashood Adekola and Hannah Aduke Adekola of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. She is the third child in a family of seven children.
She had her primary education at St. Paul African Church Primary School. After obtaining her First School Leaving Certificate, she enrolled at the Methodist Girl’s High School, Yaba, Lagos State for her secondary education.
Ibukun further gained admission to study Chemistry at the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). She is also an alumna of the Chief Executive Programme of Lagos Business School; the Global Executive MBA of IESE Business School, Barcelona-Spain; and Global CEO Programme of Wharton, IESE and C.E.I.B.S Business Schools.
Career
Growing up, Ibukun Awosika wanted to take different career paths, from architecture to law and even accountancy. This led her to start attending accounting classes while in the higher institution, even after gaining admission to study Chemistry.
Ibukun started working as an audit trainee at Akintola Williams & Co. while on her compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps Service (NYSC). Her love for architecture made her leave Akintola Williams & Co. for Alibert Nigeria Ltd., where she started working as a showroom manager.
After working at Alibert Nigeria Ltd. for a while and gaining some experiences, she moved to create her own furniture manufacturing company called Quebees Limited. Quebees Limited has over the years, evolved into The Chair Centre Limited and SOKOA Chair Centre Limited. SOKOA Chair Centre Limited is a merger between SOKOA S.A of France, Guaranty Trust Bank, The Chair Limited and other stakeholders in the furniture industry.
She is the founder/CEO of The Chair Centre Group. The companies within the group include; Furniture Manufacturers Mart, The Chair Centre Limited, Cubes and Boxes Limited, TCC Security Systems and Sokoa Chair Centre Limited. These companies are involved in manufacturing, retail and bank-way security systems services. She also sits on the board of Digital Jewel Limited and Cadbury Nig Plc.
Following the resignation of Prince Ajibola Afonja, Ibukun became the first woman to be appointed Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Nigeria’s premier and most valuable banking brand. The appointment was made known to the general public on Monday, September 7, 2015.
