On Sunday 20th September 2020, Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State announced the death of His Highness Emir of Zazzau, Alh (Dr.) Shehu Idris CFR on his Facebook handle.

Shehu Idris was until his death, the Chairman of Zazzau Emirate Council and Kaduna State Emirate Council. He was the 18th Fulani Emir of Zazzau, having ascended the throne on 8 February 1975 following the demise of Alhaji Muhammadu Aminu, the 17th Emir of Zazzau. He reportedly died at the 44 Military Hospital Kaduna today after a brief illness.

Shehu Idris was born on the 20th of February, 1936 in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Idris was born into the family of Malam Idrisu Auta and Hajiya Aminatu. His grandfather, Sarkin Zazzau Muhammadu Sambo reigned from c. 1879 to 1888 while his great-grandfather, Sarkin Zazzau Abdulkarimi reigned from c. 1834 - 1846.

Before commencing formal studies at the Zaria Elementary School in 1947,  Idris had already started his early education being tutored by two Islamic scholars in Zaria. He lost his dad at the age of 12, while still in elementary school.

Idris finished from the Zaria Elementary School in  1950 and immediately enrolled at the Zaria Middle School, where he finished his studies in 1955. He then proceeded to Katsina Training College to become a teacher.

Career, Later Life and Death

Shehu Idris first professional career as a teacher was in Hunkuyi, before he taught  at a few other schools in Zaria. After a while, he left teaching to become a private secretary to the late Emir of Zazzau Muhammadu Aminu. He also served as the secretary to the Zaria Native Authority council in 1965.

In 1973, he got appointed as the district head of Zaria, after being bestowed the title of Dan Madamin Zaria. Two years later (February 8, 1975), he was installed as the 18th Emir of Zazzau, following the demise of Alhaji Muhammadu Aminu, the 17th Emir of Zazzau

On Sunday 20th September 2020, Gov. Nasir El-Rufai announced the death of His Highness Emir of Zazzau, Alh (Dr.) Shehu Idris CFR on his Facebook handle. He died at the age of 84 at 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna around 11am.

Until his death on Sunday, the late Emir of Zazzau was the Chairman of Kaduna State Council of Traditional Rulers.

He is survived by four wives, many children as well as grand and great-grandchildren.
