Ogbonnaya Onu was born on the 1st of December, 1951 into the family of His Royal Highness, Late Eze David Aba Onu (Eze Adu of Uburu) in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State Nigeria.
After completing his elementary education, he proceeded to the prestigious Izzi High School, Abakaliki from where he obtained his West African School Certificate Examination. He further sat for the High School Examination at College of Immaculate Conception (C.I.C) Enugu.

Onu also gained admission to s study Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos (UniLag), graduating with a first-class degree in 1976. He obtained a PhD in Chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1980.

Career and Politics

Ogbonnaya Onu started teaching at St. Augustine's Seminary, Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State after his graduation from UniLag. Upon the completion of his doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley, he got another job as a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Port Harcourt.

While at the University of Port Harcourt, he served as the pioneer Head of the Department in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He also served as the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and was elected as a member of the Governing Council of the University, where he worked with others to provide leadership in its search for excellence.

Dr Onu is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers, Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu's first step into politics was when he contested for a senatorial seat in the old Imo State under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) political platform.

In 1991, he contested and won the set as the first Governor of old Abia State under the umbrella of the National Republican Convention. He was the first Chairman, Conference of Nigerian elected Governors.

During Dr. Onu's tenure as Governor, he emphasized the use of technology as an important instrument for national development by starting the processes for the establishment of a Technology Village, as well as introducing computers into selected public schools. He also abolished the State of Origin Syndrome in Abia State, thereby leading the way in appointing non-indigenes of the State into top positions of responsibility in his Administration.

In 1999, he emerged as the Presidential flag bearer for the All People's Party (ADP) but waived the position to Chief Olu Falae after a merger of his party with the Alliance for Democracy (AD) who lost to Olusegun Obasanjo of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

In 2010, he became the National Party Chairman of the All Nigerian People's Party (ANPP). ANPP was among the parties that merged in 2013 to form the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Others include the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Democratic People's Party (DPP) and some members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In 2015, he was appointed  Minister of Science and Technology after President Muhammadu Buhari emerged winner of the 2015 presidential election. He was sworn-in again as minister on 21st August 2019.

Ogbonnaya Onu is happily married to Lady Chinyere Onu and the marriage is blessed with children. Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu is a devoted Christain who never relinquishes in professing his faith.
