She became popular in 2014 for speaking up for the abducted Chibok schoolgirls in 2014. She was in fact, the o-convener of the Bring Back Our Girl (BBOG) campaign that tirelessly demanded for the rescue of the 276 schoolgirls kidnapped by terrorists in Chibok. Aisha Yesufu was born in December 1974 in Kano, Kano State, Nigeria, but her parents originally hailed from Edo State. Growing up wasn't rosy for her, as her parents weren't financially buoyant enough. According to Aisha, the place she grew up in Kano could be compared to a ghetto. The locality was in fact, nicknamed the Ajegunle of Kano and you could see a lot of street children, drug users and almajiris roaming around on a regular basis.

Aisha Yesufu was determined to go to school despite all the challenges she faced, especially as a girl child living in the northern part of the country. By the time she was 11 years old, most of her friends where already married, but she was determined to be educated and of course, leave the ghetto.

Yesufu initially got admission to study at the Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto in 1992, but had to leave the school after a crisis. She proceeded to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she gained admission to study Medicine but had to leave it again after the institution was closed following the murder of a professor in 1994. She finally completed her university education at Bayero University, Kano, where she graduated with a B.Sc degree in Microbiology.

Career and Activism

Aisha Yesufu ventured into business immediately after she was done with her university education. She once revealed that she has never worked for anyone in her life, and never intended doing so.

On how she started the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG), Yesufu has always been known for speaking out against all forms of injustice in the society since her young age. She in fact, participated in a number of protests while in school.

She revealed that her involvement in the Chibok girls’ campaign as an avenue to give back to society.

Personal Life

Aisha Yesufu got married to her husband, Aliu in 1996, at the age of 24 and they celebrated their marriage anniversary in 2018. The union is blessed with two lovely children, a boy and a girl.
