Prince Morocco Maduka was one of the most popular Igbo highlife singers and the oldest living performing musician. He started singing at a very early age of 12, until his death at the age of 60. He celebrated his 60 years anniversary on stage on 23rd and 24th October 2020, in Awka and Onitsha just a few days before his death. The music festival which was earlier slated for the 6th and 7th of March 2020, was shifted to October due to what the promoters termed “the unfortunate era of Corona Virus that is creating health fears around the world.

Prince Morocco Maduka Biography, Career and Death

Prince Morocco Maduka is one of the most talented Igbo musicians. The acclaimed King of Ekpili music has during his lifetime, played a great role in taking Ekpili music to the world. When it comes to Ekpili music Morocco is known for introducing certain elements. 

He was the first person to introduce the guitar into the genre, the keyboard, and the first to use microphone to sing in Ekpili music. He was also the first Ekpili musician to perform outside the shores of Nigeria. During his lifetime, he performed in different parts of the world, include the United States, London, Hong Kong, South Africa and Malaysia.

He started singing at a very early age of 12 and during his lifetime, released more than 120 albums. He released his first album, 'Aya Nigeria' in 1971 and three years later, he recorded another one. 

During an interview section with The Sun, he thanked God for letting him reach 76 years old. Up till his death, Prince Morocco was the oldest performing highlife musician. Other popular singers like  Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and Chief Oliver De Coque died at 72 years and 60 years respectively. He wanted to retire from singing after his 80th birthday celebration.

The veteran singer died on Thursday, 29th of October 2020. The news of his death was confirmed by the chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (Anambra Chapter), Ikeme Mazeli.

Mazeli announced the passing of the legendary singer in a statement that reads:

'With a heavy heart of sorrow…We, the entire Anambra state PMAN announce the exit of a music Legend, Dr Prince Morroco Maduka…..Ozonweluibe. He passed on this afternoon (Thursday, October 29th, 2020). All other arrangements as regards his planting to mother earth will be communicated to all of us later.'

Prince Morocco Maduka will be remembered for his good works. During his lifetime, he groomed many and his influence rubbed off on some budding acts in the Ekpili genre. Some artistes that rose with his influence still go by his name. People like Morocco Junior, Young Morocco, Nwa Morocco, Morocco Agwu and Morocco Mbaise are there to prove that he lived a good life.

Prince Morocco Maduka was happily married with 8 children, four boys and four girls.
