She won the set in the 2020 United States election, defeating her closest rival, Alan Shilepsky, by a landslide. She polled a total of 17,396 votes, which represents 74.6 per cent of the total votes cast while Shilepsky scored 4,128 votes.

Esther Agbaje was born to the family of Rev. John Agbaje, an Episcopal Church priest and Bunmi Agbaje, a librarian at the University of Minnesota. Her parents are Nigerian immigrants who came to Minnesota to further their educations. She is the first child of her parents' three children.

Esther was born in St. Paul, lived in Brainerd, and went to high school in Faribault. After completing her bachelor's degree (Political Science) at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., she proceeded the University of Pennsylvania where she obtained a master’s degree in Public Administration. She also holds a degree in law from the prestigious Harvard University.

Career and Politics

After graduating from Harvard Law School, where she worked as a student attorney for the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, defending tenants facing eviction, Agbaje came back to Minnesota as an associate at Ciresi Conlin LLP.  

Esther Agbaje had always wanted to run for a seat, right from her childhood days. She emerged victorious in the Democratic primaries after polling 607 votes. She was to face Republican Alan Shilepsky and Green Party candidate Lisa Neal-Delgado in the November general election.

After the November elections, she also emerged victories, winning 74.6 per cent of the total votes cast while her closest rival, Alan Shilepsky of the Republican Party pulled 4,128 votes, representing 17.7 per cent of the total.
