Nnamdi Chukwuocha is an American poet, politician and a Democratic member of the Delaware House of Representatives, representing District 1.

He got elected to the seat in 2018, after winning the Democratic primary with 2,306 votes (59.5%) against incumbent Charles Potter Jr. He was elected unopposed in the general election. He is also the current Poet Laureate of Delaware, along with his twin brother, Al Mills.

Nnamdi Chukwuocha was born on the 16th of November, 1970 in Wilmington, Delaware, United States. His father, William "Hicks" Anderson was a "legendary" community leader in Wilmington and the city's only community centre is named after him.

Nnamdi and his twin brother, Albert Mills became interested in writing and poetry at a very early age. They began writing at age of six and by age seven, were already performing to children at their grandmother's foster home.

Nnamdi Chukwuocha holds a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in social work from Delaware State University.

Career and Politics

Nnamdi Chukwuocha and hit twin brother are veterans of the U.S. Army. While Nnamdi was stationed in Alaska, his brother served in both Iraq and Kuwait during the first Gulf War.

Chukwuocha is also a social worker and works as a director at Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware. He, alongside his brother, founded Art for Life, a nonprofit that seeks to 'use the power of the arts to save and transform lives by empowering individuals and communities to create, utilize and support life-giving art.'

As poets, Nnamdi and his twin, Albert have won several awards for their work and appeared on HBO's Def Poetry. The duo, which are popularly known as The Twin Poets were the subject of a documentary called Why I Write.

On December 13, 2015, they were named the 17th Poets Laureate of the State of Delaware. As poets laureate, they serve as ambassadors and advocates of poetry for the state. 

Politically, Nnamdi Chukwuocha's journey has been very successful. He was elected to the Wilmington City Council in 2012 and in 2018, he was the elected president pro tempore.

On November 6, 2018, he won the Democratic primary race after defeating the incumbent Charles Potter Jr. He was elected unopposed in the general elections.

Nnamdi Chukwuocha is a vegeterian.
