7 Reasons Why Nigeria Is Called The ‘Giant Of Africa’

In this article, we'll be seeing 7 reasons why Nigeria is called the 'Giant of Africa'. Africa is the second-biggest continent in the world by both size and landmass. According to Guinnessworldrecords.com, Africa has a land area of 30,221,532 sq km (11,668,599 sq mi), second only to Asia which covers an area of 44,579,000 sq km (17,212,048 sq mi).

When talking about population, it is also home to 17% of the world's population. Out of this, Nigeria represents about 20 per cent of the total population of sub-Saharan Africa. In a continent of 54 countries, one shouldn't be surprised that a country that represents about 20% of the population is called 'the Giant'.

• Nigeria is among the few African nations that manufacturers locally. The rest include the likes of Kenya, Ghana and South Africa.
• The Nigerian entertainment industry is currently the number on the continent. The likes of Davido, Burna Boy and Wizkid have done well in taking Afro-beat music globally.
• Nigeria launched its first earth observation satellite, NigeriaSat-1, in September 2003, becoming the first African nation to launch a space satellite. We have so far, launched four satellites into space, with three still operational and one deorbited after completing its objectives.
