Terkura was actively involved in shaping the political dimension of Benue State during the military regimes and continued even after Nigeria returned to the Democratic rule. He handled several positions, including serving as the Director of publicity in former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s presidential campaign in Benue state.

Chief Terkula Suswam Biography and Educational Background

Terkura Suswam was born on the 15th of August, 1962 to the family of Zaki Suswam Tingir and Chief Mrs. Ashiwua Suswam Tingir. He originally hailed from Anyiin, Gaambe Tiev, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The late Suswam had his primary education NKST Primary School, Zaki Biam, Benue State, after which he proceeded to Army Children Primary School, Udi in Enugu State from where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.

He subsequently enrolled at Government Teachers College, Makurdi, obtaining his Grade II teachers Certificate in 1982. In his quest for education, he proceeded to the College of Education, Ankpa (the present Kogi state), where he eventually bagged NCE in 1987.

Dr. Terkura Suswam in the early 1990s vacated the political scenes to further his studies. He secured admission to study at the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. Being of the most outstanding graduates of his time, Suswam was retained t lecture at the university as a graduate assistant.

He also obtained a Master's Degree and Ph.D in Diplomatic History from Benue State University.

Career and Politics

Dr. Terkura Suswam's journey to political stardom began while at Teachers College as an active member of the youth wing of the defunct National Party of Nigeria NPN during the Second Republic.

After graduating from Ankpa, he became actively involved in shaping the political dimension of Benue state under the successive military regimes in the country.

During the political transition of former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamusi Babangida, he played the role of defunct head in the National Republican Convention as the state Financial Secretary of the party (1991- 1992) and later became the state publicity secretary of the party (1992 – 1993).

Suswam has remained visibly active in the politics of Benue state and Nigeria, apart from the many key positions in the then NRC, UNCP in 1997.

He also served as the Director of Publicity, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s presidential campaign in Benue state as well as Chairman, Appeal Committee on National Assembly primaries Abuja in 2011 and member, PDP Central Planning Committee, National Convention Abuja 2012.

On 5th May 2015, the Sankera Traditional Council unanimously elected Chief Terkura Suswam as Tor Sankera the first. The appointment was, however, nullified by the then government of Dr. Samuel Ortom when he was Benue State Governor under the platform of the APC.

Dr. Terkura Suswam is also a popular entrepreneur. He is the founder/CEO of Ashitech Conglomerate, an international multi-industry company with divergent business interest including Ashiwaves Radio, Ashi-tech Global Resources Ltd, Ashi Polytechnic Anyiin and Ashitech Global Digital Colour Seperation.

Dr. Terkura Suswam was killed in March 2021 by unknown gunmen.
