Installing a Borehole? All Things You Need To Know

The cost of installing a borehole, where to drill a borehole, how long a borehole can last, the importance of drilling a borehole and more!

How To Install A Borehole In Nigeria
Boreholes offer an alternative means of supplying your property or home with water without relying on a water supply from utility providers.
Drilling deep underground allows you to access groundwater which is then extracted and pumped into your home.
This guide will show you several points you need to know and consider if you are considering to install borehole on your property.

The Costs Of Borehole Installation

The Borehole Water Journal Online Vol. 103  outlined the following expenses for homeowners considering installation of boreholes on their property:
- SITE SELECTION: Used to determine where to locate a groundwater producing borehole.
- BOREHOLE CONSTRUCTION: Includes the mobilization of equipment to the site and back to base, per meter drilling, installation of the screen and solid casing and casing entailing supplies, gravel pack, well-head construction and sanitary seal, and entailing cleaning of the borehole after construction.
- PUMPING TEST COST: Post-construction assessment of borehole and the aquifer performance.
- HYDROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS COST: For water quality testing.
- INSTALLATION COST: For reticulation system and potable water storage tank and/or pumps
- ELECTRICITY COST: For running the pump every time it is switched on.
- MAINTENANCE COSTS: Annual checks to pumping equipment, pipe repairs and works should there be any damages or failures.
Am I Required To Register My Borehole?
The National Water Act said that you do not need to register groundwater use if it is for domestic use only: - Watering animals (not for commercial purposes) - Small gardening - Reasonable domestic use at home
Also, borehole water can be used for recreational activities such as filling a swimming pool or for emergency purposes like putting out a fire.

Where To Drill A Borehole?

Most residential stands are ringed by brick walls and fencing. Getting a 25-ton drilling rig onto the property is already a difficult task. In some cases, there is 2 choices: the middle of the driveway or the start of the driveway.
So, you need to know that you might need to do some deconstruction in order to allow a drill rig to access your property. And once the borehole drilling is done, there is some building work in order to restore your outdoor space. This is not included in the drilling costs.
How To Install A Borehole In Nigeria

This is a hassle, yes, but the reality of drilling and installing boreholes involves a huge mess in your backyard so it is better than you plan for it than be devastated after all works are done. Discuss this details with your drilling contractor and find a solution that is both practical for your home property while having the best chance of having a successful borehole.

What If The Driller Found A Dry Hole?

Your agreement with your driller is to drill a hole in the ground without a 100% possibility of tapping into a sustainable water source. If good siting procedures were followed and the unlikely event of finding a “dry” hole happens, you will still need to pay the contractor for their drilling efforts.
You will not be required, however, to pay for any types of equipment and materials that are needed for a complete installation like the electrics, piping, and pump. These materials are only needed if water is available and once a water quality test yield potential of the hole. No water means no pump or any other related equipment necessary.

We’ve Hit Water! Now What?

If a water source is found, some drillers provide yield testing services in order to find if the water is suitable for domestic use. This can also be done by separate contractors. If water is perfect, then the next step is installing a test pump in order to measure just how much water can be pumped for an adequate amount of draw down in water level.

What Kind Of Pump Do I Need?

You can have a second contractor to select and install the pump and ancillary equipment or your driller might offer a turnkey service.
Pumps have 3 categories: too small, too big and just the right size. Good selection and numerous years of a trouble free operation start with a meticulous reliable borehole data gathered from the yield test.
Have your contractors explain the capabilities of the pump and the protection devices and controls they have installed. If you are fully-informed then you will be able to recognize the first sign of problems and call qualified personnel before things get expensive.
Installing a Borehole? All Things You Need To Know

For electrical installation, you must have a qualified electrician who is well-experienced and trained with groundwater installations. Boreholes are integral parts of the electrical system of any property so it must form part of the COC or Certificate of Compliance.

How Long Can A Borehole Last?

A 20-year life for major components can be expected if all proper procedures are done.
How Should I Care and Maintain My Borehole?
Like anything else, an access to groundwater comes with a responsibility to care for the given resources for other generations and users to come:

- Pollution

The borehole’s top should be finished off and you should take basic care around the hole and not let any pesticides or other pollutants entering it. You need to know that the process of cleaning a polluted borehole is quite an expensive task.

- Water Conservation

In order to conserve water, you can irrigate only in the afternoon to reduce the losses because of evaporation. Although you can access “free” water, you need to conserve and use it sparingly. Running water in the garden and down on a water drain is wasteful. Not to mention that it adds to the cost of operating boreholes.

- Maintenance

Keeping your “free” water running all year round requires you to have regular borehole maintenance check-ups. This is quite important in order to realize the best returns on your investment.

Installing Boreholes: Is It A Good Investment?

Installing boreholes can cost from R60,000 to R100,000 (Check it in your local currency) or more depending on other factors like the types of rocks that need to be drilled, equipment used, ground conditions and more. Moreover, there is the trouble of running into a dry hole, risking you to pay thousands for drilling a worthless hole.
However, despite all the cost, having a borehole can add significant value to your home property and shall represent a good investment over a period of time— assuming that the installation is done with due care and by professionals.
