General Mohammed Babagana Monguno rtd. was the Chief of Defence Intelligence from July 2009 to September 2011; and the Commander of the Brigade of Guards from 2007 to 2009.
He was appointed National Security Adviser on the 13th of July, 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari. Monguno has also previously served as the Chief of Logistics at the Nigerian Defence headquarters and later as Commandant of the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

Not much is known about Babagana Monguno's early life but he was born around 1957, in Borno State, Nigeria. Being a relative of Shettima Ali Monguno, a federal minister during the First Republic, he had an early exposure to the Nigerian politics.
Monguno had his secondary education at the prestigious  King's College, Lagos before proceeding to the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Babagana Monguno holds a bachelor's degree in Architecture and Masters in International Relations. He also holds a PhD in Architecture from the UK. 

Career

Babagana Monguno has previously served as the Chief of Logistics at Defence Headquarters and later as Commander of the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).
Monguno was also a Commander, Guards Brigade, Deputy Commandant, National Defence College, and Chief of Defence Intelligence.
After turning 56 in September 2013, Monguno voluntarily retired from from the Nigerian Army. Prior to his retirement, he was considered for Chief of Army Staff position.
On July 13, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Monguno as the National Security Adviser. He succeeded Colonel Sambo Dasuki.

Babagana Monguno is married to the daughter of former Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey, Muhammad Lawal Munnir, Nafisah Munir and they have three children, Amir, Munnir, and Samir.
