Ibrahim Gambari was born on the 24th of November, 1944 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. His nephew Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, is the Emir of Illorin. Being born into a Fulani ruling class family, he understood the value of education at a very early age. 
He had his secondary education at the King's College, Lagos and moved for a B. Sc. degree in Economics from the London School of Economics in 1968, and later obtained his M.A and Ph.D from the Columbia University, New York, USA in Political Science /International Relations.

After education, Gambari began to teach at the City University of New York in 1969, and he worked at the University of Albany.
He also taught at the Ahmadu Bello University, in Zaria, Kaduna State and was a visiting professor at the Howard University, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and Georgetown University, all in Washington, D.C.
He has also worked as both a research fellow at the Brookings Institution and a Resident Scholar at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center, the Rockefeller Foundation-run center in Italy.

Talking about his political and diplomatic career, Gambari has served as the Minister for External Affairs between 1984 and 1985.
This was under the General Muhammadu Buhari's military regime. He holds the record for being the longest serving Nigerian Ambassador to the United Nations (1990-1999), serving under five Heads of State and Presidents.
