Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was born on the 25th of December 1949 in  Ganduje village, Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano State. He started his early education in Qur'anic and Islamiyya school at his village before moving to his local government headquarters where he attended Dawakin Tofa Primary School from 1956 to 1963. 
He further enrolled in the Government Secondary School Birnin Kudu for his secondary education, where he finished from in 1968. On obtaining his SSCE, he gained admission into the  Advanced Teachers' College.
Abdullahi Umar Ganduje further attended Ahmadu Bello University, where he graduated from in 1975 with a Bachelors in Science Education.
In 1979, Ganduje obtained a master's degree in applied educational psychology from Bayero University Kano. He further returned to Ahmadu Bello University for a Master of Public Administration degree.
In 1993, he got his doctorate in Public Administration from University of Ibadan.


During the Served Nigerian Republic, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje joined the now-defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). Between 1979 to 1980, he served as the Kano State Assistant Secretary.
In 1979, he contested for the House of Representatives election under the NPN but lost.
He the late 1990s, he joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP), aspiring to become the party's gubernatorial candidate but lost the primaries to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He was later picked up as the deputy to Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso between 1999 and 2003.
While serving as the deputy governor, Ganduje was also appointed as the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government.
He also handled other posts, including serving as the special Adviser (Political) to the Hon. Minister of Defence, Federal Republic of Nigeria and as a member of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

On the 28th of November, 2014, Ganduje was selected as the consensus candidate to succeed Kwankwaso as Governor of Kano State. He contested under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and won, defeating the opposition candidate, Malam Salihu Takai, with 1,546,434 votes against Takai's 509,726.
On Sunday, 24th March 2019, he won the 2019 gubernatorial elections to return to office for his second term.

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is married to Hafsat Umar and they have two children, Fatima Umar Ganduje and Muhammad Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
He is a Muslim.
