Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was born on the 10th of January, 1966 in Tambuwal Village, Sokoto State, Nigeria to Waziri Tambuwal. He started his early primary education at Tambuwal Primary School, Tambuwal, Sokoto State from where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1979.
In 1984, he proceeded to Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto after obtaining the Teachers Grade 11 Certificate from Government Teachers’ College, Dogon-Daji.
Tambuwal graduated from Usman Dan Fodio University in 1991 with an LLB (Hons) degree. He then proceeded for the one-year compulsory legal studies at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos. In 1992, he was called to the Bar after obtaining his Bachelor of Laws Degree.

Apart from studying for his law degree, Tambuwal has also attended several courses abroad, including: Lawmaking for the Communications Sectors –BMIT, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2004; Telecoms Regulatory Master Class–Bath UK, 2004; Tulane University – International Legislative Drafting, 2005; Regulating a Competitive Industry-UK, Brussels, 2005 and Stanford Graduate School of Business – Influence and Negotiation, 2008.

Political Career

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal started his career in 1999 as the Personal Assistant on Legislative Affairs to Senator Abdullahi Wali, the then Senate Leader, a positioned he handled till 2000.

In 2003, he ran for a legislative seat as representative of the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency under the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP and won the election.

By 2004, he became the Minority Leader of the House, from which position he rallied and mobilized his colleagues into the strongest opposition movement the House of Representatives ever witnessed.

In 2007, he defected to the Democratic People's Party (DPP) alongside the former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa. He however returned back to the ANPP to contest for the House of Reps when DPP denied return tickets to former ANPP legislators.

He once again defected to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) when Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, the ANPP governorship candidate for Sokoto State in the 2007 election dumped the party for PDP.

In 2005, he was the Minority Leader of the House until his defection to the PDP. He was however elected to the Deputy Chief Whip after his re-election to the House in 2007.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was elected governor during the 2015 Nigeria general elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC) party. He was inaugurated on 29 May 2015.

On August 1, 2018, Tambuwal defected from the APC back to the People's Democratic Party. He was re-elected as governor during the 2019 Nigeria general elections under the PDP. He polled 512,002 votes to emerge the winner, beating Mr. Aliyu of the APC who who polled 511,660 votes.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal declared his intentions of running for president under the PDP. He was among the 12 candidates including four from his north western region that contested PDP presidential nomination.
He was however, popular in the race, being among the top four candidates that picked the form. The other ones were Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Bukola Saraki
In the primary election, Tambuwal emerged second position with 693 delegate votes behind Atiku Abubakar who won with 1,532 votes.

Personal Life

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is married to two wives, Haj. Mariya Aminu Waziri and Maryam Mairo Mustapha Aminu Waziri. The marriage is blesses with six children.
