Godwin Obaseki was born on the 1st of July, 1957 in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria as the third child in his family. His father name is Pa Roland Obaseki (late) while his mother is Madam Stella Gbinigie.
Gov. Obaseki started his early education at the St. Matthews Anglican Primary School. After obtaining his first school leaving certificate, he proceeded to Eghosa Anglican Grammar School for his secondary education.
He further gained an admission to study at the University of Ibadan, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Classics.
After completing his NYSC program, he later left Nigeria for the United States to attend Columbia University and Pace University in New York, where he obtained an MBA in Finance and International Business.

Career

Godwin Obaseki began his career in 1983 as a stockbroker with Capital Trust Brokers Limited, Lagos. After working there for a while, he transferred his services to the International Merchant Bank. 
In 1988, he moved to AVC Funds Limited, Lagos, where he served as a Project Manager before moving back to New York to work as a  Principal of Equatorial Finance Company.
In 1995, Mr Obaseki founded Afrinvest West Africa Limited (formerly Securities Transactions & Trust Company Limited (SecTrust). 
In September 2016, he stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afrinvest to contest the gubernatorial election in Edo State.
Politics:
Before winning the Edo State gubernatorial elections in 2016, Godwin served as voluntary Chairman of the Edo State Economic and Strategy Team. He also served as the Chairman of Tax Assessment Review Committee for Edo State Internal Revenue Service (TARC) and the Committee on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
Since he assumed duties as the Executive Governor of Edo State on 12 November 2016, Gov. Godwin Obaseki has enacted projects with the aim of making the state an investment hub.

• The Benin Industrial Park

After the 2020 Edo State gubernatorial elections, Godwin Obaseki was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) polling 307,955 against APC's Osagie Ize-Iyamu who polled 223,619.

Godwin Obaseki's Wife

Godwin Obaseki is married to Betsy Bene Obaseki, a native of Buguma, Kalabari kingdom, Rivers State. She had her primary education at Jos and Port Harcourt, before proceeding to the Benin City Federal Government Girls College.
On obtaining his SSCE, she gained admission to study Accounting at the University of Lagos. She also obtained her Master's degree from the same institution. 

Awards and Recognitions

• He received the Extraordinary Personality Award from Silverbird Television for his impressive human capacity development, job creation, healthcare, agric & infrastructural development reforms in Edo State.
• In 2019, he received an award from the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) as the best performing Governor of the year in October 2019.
