Philip Shaibu was born on the 1st of December 1969 in Kaduna State, Nigeria. His father, Pastor Francis Osikpomobo Shaibu was a pastor and raised him up with strong Christian virtue. His mother's name is Lucy Momoh. Philip Shaibu hails from Jattu Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.Philip started his early primary education at St. Augustine Primary School, Tundu Wada Kaduna but finished at L.E.A Primary School Barnawa, Kaduna State. He further enrolled at the Saudana Memorial Secondary School, Kawo Kaduna for his secondary education. He obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC)
In 1995, Philip Shaibu gained admission to study Accounting at the University of Jos. he graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree.
Shaibu became active in politics while in school. He served as the Welfare Secretary of the Student Union Government (SUG) during his time. In 2000, he was elected the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
He further proceeded to the University of Benin, (UNIBEN) where he obtained a Master’s Degree (M. BA.) in Business Administration. He has also attended several courses and training within and outside the shores of Nigeria.
Career
Upon graduation from the higher institution, Philip Shaibu started working at the Nigerian Prison Service, Abuja. In 2002, he voluntarily retired from the Nigerian Prison Service in 2002 to venture into politics.In 2003, Shaibu contested elections into the Edo State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but lost.
He didn't give up but rather in 2007, contested again and won the election to represent the Etsako West Constituency under the platform of the Action Congress (AC) at the Edo state House of Assembly. While at the Edo State House of Assembly, he was appointed the Minority whip of the 4th Assembly and became the chairman house committee on education.
In February 2010, he was elected as the majority leader after Rt. Hon. Zakawanu Garuba was impeached as the Speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly. He also served as the Chairman House Committee on Rules, Business and Government House.
In 2015, he contested and won the Etsako Federal constituency House of Representatives. He polled a total of 42,079 votes, defeating his closest rival, Abbas Braimah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 29,941 votes. Shaibu Elamah of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came third with 8,654 votes.
At the 2016 gubernatorial election, Philip Shaibu was unanimously announced as the running mate to Governor Godwin Obaseki and the duo eventually won the election. They contested under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
In June 2020, Shaibu resigned membership of the APC following his boss's defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was recently announced as the running mate in the governorship election that will be taking place on September 19, 2020.
After the 2020 Edo State gubernatorial elections, Godwin Obaseki was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) polling 307,955 against APC's Osagie Ize-Iyamu who polled 223,619.
