Abubakar Malami was born on the 17th of April, 1967 in Birnin Kebbi of Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State into the family of late Hon. Khadi Malami Nasarawa and Halima Malami.
He began his early primary at Nassarawa Primary School, Birnin Kebbi before proceeding to the College of Arts and Arabic Studies for his secondary education.
In 1987, he gained admission into the prestigious Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Laws. He was called to the bar in 1998. Two years later, he obtained a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Maiduguri.

Career

Abubakar Malami has served in various capacities as a legal practitioner, including being a counsel and magistrate in Kebbi State. He also served as the National Legal Adviser of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
He was conferred with the distinguished rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2008, in less than 17 years after he was called to the bar.

He has also served in other various capacities including:

• He was a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Legal Team, Election Petition (2003)
• He was a member of the Kano State LG Election Tribunal (2004)
• In 2011, Malami served as the Chairman Legal Team, CPC Presidential Campaign Organisation.
• In 2013, he served as the Chairman Legal Team, CPC Presidential Campaign Organisation
• He also served as the CPC National Legal Adviser and was active in the merger that brought about the APC
• He was a member of the National Convention and Congress Committee (2013)
• In 2013, he was also part of the APC Electoral Committee For Anambra State Gubernatorial Election (2013)
• In May 2014 Malami served as the Chairman, APC Kano State Congress Appeals Committee

He contested for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Kebbi State for the 2015 elections but lost the primaries to Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
In November 2015, he was appointed as Minister for Justice and Attorney-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the age of 48, making him the youngest member of the federal executive council.

In August 2019, Abubakar Malami was re-appointed by President Buhari as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.
