Yakubu Dogara was born on the 26th of December, 1967 into the family of Yakubu Ganawuri and Saratu Yakubu. He began his primary education at Gwarangah Primary School, Bauchi State in 1976. In 1982, he proceeded to the Bauchi Teachers’ College for his secondary education, obtaining a Grade II Teachers’ Certificate in 1987. 
He further gained admission to study Law at the University of Jos, Plateau State in 1988. He graduated in 1992 with  Bachelor of Law (LLB Hons.) degree. He was called to the bar in 1993.
Dogara also has certificates from various institutions around the world, including Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland,  Oxford University and Cambridge University, United Kingdom.

Career and Politics

In 1988, Yakubu Dogara took up employment as a teacher at the ATBU Staff School in Bauchi. He further proceeded to Akwa Ibom state (in 1993) for his mandatory National Youth Service Corps, during which he served at Nigerian Christian Corpers’ Fellowship (NCCF).
Upon completing his NYSC program, he went into private legal practice until 2005 when he was appointed Special Assistant to the Minister of State for Transport.
Dogara served as the SA to the then Minister of State for Transport until 2006 when he decided to contest to represent the Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa-Balewa constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, a move that went successfully. He was also appointed as a minister of Health in 2011 during Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's tenure.
On July 2020, he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), returning to his former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). He had earlier decamped to the PDP before the 2019 general elections alongside the former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.

Dogara is a devoted Christain and member of the Living Faith Church Worldwide. He held a thanksgiving service at one of the church's branches shortly after his election as speaker.
