Kenneth Lusaka is a Kenyan politician, who served as the 1st Governor of Bungoma County in Kenya.
He is currently serving as a speaker of the Kenyan Senate, after winning on the second round in the 2017 elections with 42 votes, against his closest rival, Farah Maalim who garnered 25 votes. He is also the second speaker of the senate in the history of Kenya.

Kenneth Lusaka was born on the 18th of September, 1963 in Bungoma County. After completing his primary education at Kamukuywa Primary School, he enrolled at Kibabii High School for his 'O' Levels and later Chesamisi High School and Friends School Kamusinga for his 'A' levels.
He further gained admission to study Political Science and History at the University of Nairobi. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree, Kenneth Lusaka proceeded to the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) from where he earned an MA in Public Policy. He also served as the President of Scholars for the student body while in school.

Career and Politics

After leaving the higher institution, Kenneth Lusaka was jobless for a month or two before being called for interviews, where out of 80 people, he was among the 10 posted as District Officers. He was in Muhoroni, and then in Homa Bay before being picked to go for a master’s degree in the Netherlands on Policy and Administration.

When President Kibaki formed his government in 2008, he became the first secretary of provincial administration in the Office of the President.

In 2012, he resigned from his position as a Permanent Secretary, to make a debut in elective politics where he contested the Bungoma Gubernatorial seat during the 2013 General Elections on a New Ford Kenya ticket. He was elected as the first governor of Bungoma County on 4th of March 2013.

After completing his tenure in 2017, he contested again for a second term as governor of Bungoma County, but this time on a Jubilee Party ticket but lost to Wycliffe Wangamati of the Ford Kenya. Wangamati won the election narrowly with 48.74% of the vote to Lusaka’s 43.41%.

In a recent interview by StandardMedia.co.ke, he narrated how he felt after losing the governorship election and finally getting a call from the president who wanted him to go for the senate.

Personal Life

Kenneth Lusaka is happily married to Margaret Makelo, a Senior Research Officer at Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. The two met at the University of Nairobi in 1988 during political campaigns in Webuye and got married in 1989.
The marriage is blessed with three children, a daughter aged 34, a son aged 30 and another daughter aged 28. He also has grandchildren.
